Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin criticized Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami's announcement of a one-thousand-crore rupee relief package for Cyclone Gaja victims, characterizing it as a cosmetic gesture announced from an aircraft rather than an authentic response to ground realities. Stalin questioned who the administration intended to deceive by declaring high-sounding fiscal numbers without personally visiting affected villages or speaking directly with families who lost their livelihood.

Stalin emphasized that genuine disaster management requires physical empathy and direct engagement. Floating across delta skies in a helicopter detached the state leadership from the intense suffering of rural communities whose dwellings were shattered and whose standing coconut and paddy crops were decimated. He noted that without inspecting ruined farmland, understanding local infrastructure destruction, or evaluating loss of livestock on site, it is impossible for the administration to comprehend the catastrophic scale of the tragedy.

Stalin demanded that the state government move past headline-driven announcements and initiate immediate cash assistance, emergency food supplies, and rapid power restoration. He stressed that relief funds must be disbursed transparently to prevent bureaucratic diversion and ensure comprehensive long-term rehabilitation for agrarian workers.
