DMK president M.K. Stalin voiced grave concern over the indefinite shutdown of more than 1,100 fireworks manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu, warning that stringent operational restrictions and burst bans threatened the livelihoods of several lakh workers. Stalin noted that intense regulatory pressures and unfeasible production norms had pushed the indigenous pyrotechnics cluster centered around Sivakasi into an acute economic crisis, prompting manufacturers to halt production entirely.
Stalin emphasized that the fireworks sector provides direct and indirect employment to rural women, smallholders, and unorganized laborers who have no alternative industrial opportunities in arid southern districts. Imposing sudden curbs without providing viable technological alternatives or transitional support jeopardized regional manufacturing stability and caused immense economic hardship for working-class families dependent on daily wages.
Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to intervene proactively by initiating tripartite consultations with factory owners, trade unions, and central regulatory authorities. He demanded that the state leadership strongly petition the Union government to formulate balanced environmental guidelines that protect public health while securing the economic viability of traditional manufacturing industries and safeguarding industrial employment. Stalin emphasized that preserving industrial employment must remain a top policy priority.
