DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the dissolution of Sri Lanka's parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena as an unconstitutional assault on democracy that triggered an acute political crisis and endangered the safety and political future of Sri Lankan Tamils. Stalin noted that dissolving parliament prematurely to install a controversial regime undermined parliamentary conventions and threatened to undo modest postwar progress achieved regarding devolution of powers and human rights accountability.
Stalin expressed deep concern that prolonged constitutional turbulence in Colombo directly jeopardizes the security, land rights, and rehabilitation of Eelam Tamils who have endured decades of systemic marginalization and war atrocities. He pointed out that any revival of authoritarian and majoritarian chauvinism in the island nation poses severe existential hazards for Tamil minority communities awaiting genuine political justice and autonomous self-governance.
Stalin urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union government to shed their persistent diplomatic passivity and take proactive international measures to safeguard Sri Lankan Tamils. He emphasized that New Delhi must leverage diplomatic channels to ensure full compliance with constitutional norms, prevent human rights violations, and secure equitable political rights for Tamils.
