DMK president M.K. Stalin marked the second anniversary of the 2016 currency demonetization by sharply questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the outcomes of a fiscal measure that severely impacted 120 crore citizens. Stalin asserted that the sudden invalidation of eighty-six percent of circulating cash had completely failed to fulfill any of its proclaimed objectives, including the elimination of black money, eradication of corruption, or curbing of counterfeit currency and terrorism financing.
Stalin pointed out that while ordinary citizens endured prolonged hardship, lost personal savings, and stood in grueling bank queues, wealthy tax evaders experienced minimal disruption. The reckless monetary shock battered informal trade networks, forced thousands of micro and small enterprises to shutter permanently, and triggered widespread unemployment across manufacturing hubs like Tiruppur and Coimbatore. He criticized the prime minister for traveling abroad instead of providing a transparent accounting of this policy failure to parliament.
Stalin affirmed that demonetization was an unmitigated disaster authored by authoritarian economic planning. He demanded that the Union government acknowledge the widespread economic disruption inflicted on working families and small businesses nationwide. Stalin pledged that the opposition will hold the central leadership accountable for economic distress.
