Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin called upon the Election Commission of India to schedule by-elections immediately for twenty vacant assembly constituencies across Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that eighteen constituencies had remained without legislative representation for over a year following the disqualification of dissident ruling party legislators. In addition, vacancies in Thiruparankundram and Thiruvarur remained unfilled, depriving millions of citizens of elected representation and democratic voice in the state assembly.

Stalin stressed that delaying elections in twenty constituencies undermined constitutional democracy and stalled vital developmental works in those areas. He noted that residents faced severe administrative neglect without elected legislators to raise constituency grievances or monitor essential public welfare projects. He criticized authorities for deferring polls under flimsy pretexts, asserting that administrative excuses could not justify denying fundamental democratic rights to the electorate.

Declaring that the DMK was fully prepared to face the electorate, Stalin demanded that the Election Commission uphold constitutional rules and notify election schedules without further postponement. He expressed confidence that people across Tamil Nadu were eager to register their democratic verdict against administrative failure, governance paralysis, and severe lack of public accountability.
