DMK president M.K. Stalin sharply criticized the Tamil Nadu government for failing to operationalize the Lokayukta anti-corruption body, citing pointed questions raised by the Supreme Court of India. The apex court had pulled up the state administration for not appointing a chairperson and members months after passing the legislation in July 2018. Stalin stated that this judicial reprimand thoroughly exposed the ruling dispensation's complete lack of political will to combat public corruption.
Stalin remarked that the government enacted a diluted Lokayukta law solely under judicial compulsion and subsequently stalled its practical implementation. He alleged that ministers feared an operational anti-graft watchdog would immediately scrutinize major administrative irregularities, suspect tender allocations, and high-level graft complaints across departments. He suggested that genuine apprehension of cabinet members facing legal prosecution and imprisonment explained the deliberate official inertia.
Demanding the immediate constitution of an independent and empowered Lokayukta, Stalin emphasized that transparent governance requires functional oversight mechanisms. He urged the administration to appoint credible judicial heads without further evasion, warning that the public would not tolerate endless delays designed to shield corrupt public officials from statutory investigation.
