DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned a Sri Lankan court's ruling sentencing Thoothukudi fishermen to three months imprisonment and imposing exorbitant fines of sixty lakh rupees each. Stalin described the judicial verdict as an outrageous escalation of harassment against traditional Indian fishermen pursuing their traditional livelihood in historic waters. He warned that imposing punitive financial penalties designed to bankrupt poor fishing families represented an intolerable form of state intimidation by Colombo.
Stalin pointed out that Sri Lanka's enacted maritime law, which prescribes massive monetary fines and lengthy prison terms for crossing maritime boundaries, directly violates traditional fishing agreements and bilateral understandings. He emphasized that the coastal community in Tamil Nadu faced constant distress, vessel confiscations, and physical assaults from the Sri Lankan navy, yet the central government remained largely indifferent to their suffering.
Urging New Delhi to act decisively, Stalin demanded that the Union government secure the immediate and unconditional release of the detained Thoothukudi fishermen and their seized boats. He insisted that the Ministry of External Affairs must apply firm diplomatic pressure on Sri Lanka to repeal its draconian maritime legislation permanently.
