DMK president M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government to initiate immediate dialogue with fishing community associations after coastal workers announced an indefinite strike starting October 25. Stalin questioned what concrete security measures the state administration had taken to eliminate the pervasive fear and mortal peril faced by Tamil fishermen venturing into the sea for their daily bread. He noted that coastal families lived in constant dread of naval attacks and vessel seizures.
Stalin highlighted the growing desperation among traditional fishing communities who endure arbitrary arrests, high monetary penalties, and confiscation of mechanized boats by foreign authorities. Despite repeated pleas submitted to state and central departments, the government failed to establish effective safety protocols, provide adequate financial compensation for damaged vessels, or formulate an enduring diplomatic solution ensuring unhindered access to traditional fishing grounds.
Stalin demanded that the state leadership invite representatives of fishermen federations for urgent consultative talks before the scheduled strike paralyzed coastal economic activity. He asserted that protecting fishermen's constitutional rights, preserving their maritime livelihoods, and providing robust state insurance coverage must be treated as paramount administrative responsibilities rather than ignored.
