Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin questioned the starkly conflicting statements issued by the Tamil Nadu government regarding state coal inventories and thermal power generation capabilities. Stalin highlighted that while the Electricity Minister publicly assured citizens that the state electricity board maintained comfortable coal reserves, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami petitioned the central government claiming acute shortages and demanding urgent emergency coal allocations. He pointed out that such mutual contradictions exposed total administrative confusion.

Stalin observed that creating an artificial sense of crisis appeared to be a calculated precursor to bypassing competitive procurement norms. He questioned why the state administration rushed to dilute established tender conditions and pursue emergency coal imports from private international suppliers at exorbitant prices when official data remained ambiguous and contradictory. Such opaque procurement methods raised serious concerns of financial manipulation and contractor kickbacks within TANGEDCO.

Demanding an immediate white paper on coal stocks and power generation costs, Stalin urged the state administration to maintain complete transparency. He warned that reckless procurement waivers and inflated import deals would burden the state power utility with unsustainable debts, ultimately forcing tariff hikes on ordinary electricity consumers across Tamil Nadu.
