Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to initiate swift and decisive legal action against all individuals responsible for bribery in university vice-chancellor selections. Stalin noted that when credible information concerning systemic corruption emerges, the constitutional duty of the Governor, who functions as the Chancellor of state universities, is to order statutory investigations rather than merely expressing helpless regret. He stressed that administrative heads cannot remain passive observers of executive decay.

Stalin pointed out that the Governor himself publicly acknowledged receiving complaints from senior educationists detailing how vice-chancellor positions were systematically auctioned for tens of crores of rupees under the AIADMK administration. With the head of state confirming widespread commercialization of academic appointments, Stalin argued that there was no justification for withholding immediate criminal prosecution against corrupt intermediaries, ministers, and syndicates involved in destroying higher education standards.

Stalin demanded that the Governor order registration of criminal cases through independent anti-corruption agencies, regardless of how powerful or high-ranking the perpetrators might be. He declared that restoring academic integrity, transparent merit-based appointments, and public faith in state universities requires uncompromising statutory punishment for those who commodified prestigious academic posts.
