DMK president M.K. Stalin termed the police arrest of Nakkheeran magazine editor R. Gopal a fascist assault and an open threat to freedom of the press and constitutional free speech. Gopal was detained by state police following investigative articles published by his magazine regarding the controversial college assistant professor scandal involving higher administrative offices. Stalin stated that resorting to punitive criminal detentions against journalists exposed the dictatorial mindset of the ruling BJP-AIADMK alliance.
Stalin emphasized that investigative journalism plays an essential democratic watchdog role by bringing hidden institutional abuses and executive wrongdoing into public debate. When governments deploy police forces to arrest editors rather than addressing documented administrative scandals, they signal a complete breakdown of democratic tolerance. Using outdated penal sections to punish investigative reportage was intended to instill widespread fear across the entire journalistic community in Tamil Nadu.
Condemning the high-handed police crackdown, Stalin affirmed that the Fourth Estate must be protected from authoritarian intimidation and administrative overreach. He demanded the immediate dropping of all fabricated charges against the editor, declaring that the DMK stands steadfastly with working journalists in defending constitutional liberties, press autonomy, and democratic dissent.
