Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin questioned the underlying motives of the Election Commission of India in withholding by-election dates for the Thiruparankundram and Thiruvarur assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu while announcing general elections for five states and by-polls for Karnataka. Stalin described the selective exclusion of Tamil Nadu constituencies as an anti-democratic decision that favored the ruling establishment at the expense of voters' constitutional representation.

Stalin pointed out that statutory provisions mandate the filling of legislative assembly vacancies within six months of their occurrence. While the poll panel demonstrated administrative capability by conducting simultaneous elections across multiple large states, its refusal to notify polls for two assembly seats in Tamil Nadu raised serious doubts regarding its institutional independence. Deferring elections based on routine bureaucratic representations from the state government undermined the Commission's constitutional mandate.

Demanding an immediate clarification from the Election Commission, Stalin urged the constitutional body to maintain complete impartiality and demonstrate adherence to democratic norms. He asserted that the electorate in Thiruvarur and Thiruparankundram must not be deprived of their democratic voice, urging the Commission to announce polling dates without political favoritism.
