Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin cited official Right to Information disclosures to challenge claims made by Union and state ministers regarding the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences hospital in Madurai. Ruling party ministers had repeatedly claimed that the Union government had allocated Rs 2,000 crore and that on-site construction was ready to commence immediately. Stalin stated that statutory records proved these public statements were baseless fabrications aimed at misleading citizens.

Stalin criticized the ruling dispensations at both central and state levels for maintaining an intentional campaign of deception instead of delivering essential healthcare infrastructure to southern Tamil Nadu. He emphasized that the people of Madurai and southern districts had waited years for tertiary medical facilities, only to receive hollow political announcements, unfulfilled budgetary promises, and delayed administrative approvals from the health ministry.

Stalin demanded that the Union Ministry of Health formally sanction the required financial outlay and issue transparent, binding timelines for executing the Madurai AIIMS project. He reiterated that the DMK would persistently advocate for premier healthcare institutions across Tamil Nadu and hold executive authorities accountable to genuine public welfare needs and equitable healthcare access.
