The Supreme Court #AadhaarVerdict brings relief in the sense that while upholding sections that enable social inclusion, it has struck down provisions curbing citizens' rights to privacy & consent.
A welcome change is that Aadhaar is not mandated in schools & for entrance exams.
DMK president M.K. Stalin welcomed the landmark judgment delivered by the Supreme Court of India on the constitutional validity of the Aadhaar scheme. He noted that the apex court provided substantial relief by striking down draconian provisions that curtailed citizens' fundamental rights to personal privacy and individual consent, while preserving statutory sections that enable social inclusion and targeted welfare deliveries for underprivileged communities across the country.
Stalin specifically welcomed the court's decisive directive clarifying that Aadhaar authentication cannot be mandated for school admissions or competitive entrance examinations. He emphasized that forcing young students and children to submit biometric data to access basic schooling had created unnecessary bureaucratic barriers for disadvantaged families seeking educational advancement across the state and nationwide.
Stalin reiterated that while technological systems can assist transparent distribution of public welfare subsidies, they must never compromise constitutional liberties, personal privacy, or citizen autonomy. He called upon the Union government to implement the judicial directives faithfully, eliminate coercive biometric compliance in public services, and protect citizens from unlawful surveillance, unauthorized data commercialization, and intrusive commercial profiling across all sectors in India.
