DMK president M.K. Stalin condemned the Edappadi K. Palaniswami-led AIADMK government for misusing state power and statutory machinery to intimidate independent journalism and suppress investigative reporting on ministerial corruption. He noted that whenever news organizations published documented exposés revealing financial misconduct within state departments, the administration retaliated with criminal defamation notices, police harassment, and executive intimidation against reporters, editors, and publishers across media houses.
Stalin emphasized that a robust, independent press is the indispensable fourth pillar of constitutional democracy, possessing the democratic mandate to hold elected representatives and public institutions accountable to citizens. He observed that utilizing state resources to gag legitimate media scrutiny reflects authoritarian intolerance and acute political guilt within an administration steeped in systemic corruption and administrative decline.
Stalin demanded that the state government immediately withdraw all punitive defamation proceedings filed against news publications and uphold constitutional guarantees of free speech. He affirmed that the DMK stands in solidarity with working journalists, pledging to safeguard media freedom and ensure that administrative irregularities exposed by the press are pursued through lawful constitutional channels without executive interference or political retaliation.
