DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union Ministry of Water Resources for releasing a study that claimed the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi was not solely responsible for local environmental pollution. Speaking against the findings, Stalin underscored that publishing such an assessment while litigation remained actively pending before the judiciary was deeply improper and undermined public interest. He urged the Union government to withdraw the controversial study immediately in deference to local community concerns.
Stalin emphasized that the people of Thoothukudi had endured severe ecological degradation and health hazards caused by industrial emissions over several decades. Public agitation against the smelter had culminated in massive civic protests, which faced violent state police firing earlier that year. The state government had consequently ordered the permanent closure of the plant following intense public indignation across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin warned that official attempts to soften regulatory scrutiny or rationalize industrial pollution would cause acute distress among affected residents. He affirmed that the DMK remained resolute in standing alongside the people of Thoothukudi, insisting that environmental protection, clean drinking water, and human health must prevail over corporate considerations in public policy decisions.
