DMK president M.K. Stalin appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to withdraw criminal charges filed against research student Lois Sofia, allowing her to travel to Canada unhindered to pursue higher academic studies. Sofia had been arrested at Thoothukudi airport after voicing a political slogan on a commercial flight in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP president Tamilisai Soundararajan. Stalin urged the BJP state leadership to recognize that criticism in public life is natural and healthy, calling for the formal withdrawal of the police complaint.
Stalin underscored that slapping stringent criminal provisions on a young scholar for uttering a peaceful slogan reflected vindictive governance and intolerance towards free expression. The disproportionate administrative reaction threatened to derail the promising career of a talented student dedicated to scientific research. He stressed that democratic societies flourish when authorities engage with diverse opinions rather than using state machinery to punish verbal dissent.
Stalin called upon administrative authorities to drop all punitive proceedings against Sofia immediately. He reaffirmed the DMK commitment to defending constitutional free speech, civil liberties, and educational aspirations of Tamil Nadu youth against authoritarian overreach and political intimidation.
