DMK president M.K. Stalin announced that the DMK would extend comprehensive support to the nationwide Bharat Bandh called by the Indian National Congress on September 10, 2018. The shutdown was organized to protest relentless price hikes in petrol and diesel imposed by the Union government. Stalin urged the people of Tamil Nadu, trade associations, transport unions, and party cadres to participate actively to demonstrate widespread public dissatisfaction with spiraling energy tariffs.

Stalin noted that skyrocketing fuel rates had severely burdened salaried workers, small business owners, farmers, and daily wage earners across the country. Higher transport costs directly inflated the prices of essential commodities, groceries, and freight services, creating financial distress for ordinary households. He criticized the Union government for continually increasing excise duties instead of passing on global crude price benefits to consumers.

Stalin affirmed that the DMK stood shoulder to shoulder with democratic and secular forces led by Rahul Gandhi to challenge punitive fiscal policies. He declared that massive civic participation in the nationwide strike would send a resolute message demanding immediate reductions in central fuel levies and tangible relief for struggling families.
