#GutkhaScam Bribe-giver & middleman arrested; but even after raids why is CBI hesitating to arrest Minister C Vijay Bhaskar & DGP TK Rajendran who allegedly took bribes?

The Governor must dismiss both and CBI should arrest them to demonstrate that all are equal before law.

Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin questioned the delay by the Central Bureau of Investigation in arresting Tamil Nadu Health Minister C. Vijayabaskar and Director General of Police T.K. Rajendran following widespread raids connected to the multi-crore Gutkha bribery scam. While the central investigative agency had taken bribe givers and intermediaries into custody, top public officials named in documentary ledgers remained unarrested. Stalin urged the Governor of Tamil Nadu to exercise constitutional powers to dismiss both figures immediately to demonstrate that all citizens remain equal before the law.

Stalin pointed out that allowing a tainted minister and the highest-ranking police officer to retain executive authority compromised evidentiary integrity and public faith in statutory institutions. He noted that official diaries seized during searches recorded systematic illicit payments made to permit the distribution of banned tobacco substances across Chennai and surrounding districts.

Stalin asserted that the CBI must act impartially without granting political shield to ruling figures. He pledged that the DMK would continue its uncompromising legal and public agitation until every high-ranking official implicated in commercial corruption is brought to justice under criminal jurisprudence.
