DMK president M.K. Stalin warmly welcomed the landmark Supreme Court ruling confirming that the Tamil Nadu government holds constitutional authority to decide on the release of seven life convicts, including A.G. Perarivalan. The individuals had undergone continuous imprisonment for over twenty-seven years. Stalin urged Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to convene an immediate meeting of the state cabinet and adopt a formal resolution under Article 161 of the Constitution recommending their release to the Governor.
Stalin emphasized that humanitarian compassion and judicial finality required swift administrative action without political hesitation or procedural procrastination. The extended incarceration of these convicts had prompted persistent appeals from human rights advocates, legal scholars, and broad sections of Tamil society seeking executive clemency. He noted that the highest court had definitively cleared constitutional obstacles, placing the responsibility squarely on the state leadership.
Stalin reiterated that the DMK had consistently supported clemency on humanitarian grounds throughout their prolonged judicial journey. He called upon the ruling administration to demonstrate genuine political will by submitting the cabinet resolution to the Governor without delay, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration of the Tamil people.
