DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a blistering condemnation of the Tamil Nadu government following the midnight arrest and judicial remand of student Lois Sofia for raising a slogan critical of the Bharatiya Janata Party aboard an aircraft. Stalin denounced the police action as an anti-democratic attack on constitutional liberty and freedom of speech, demanding Sofia's unconditional and immediate release. He questioned how many lakhs of citizens the state administration intended to jail if speaking against the ruling regime was treated as an imprisonable offence, defiantly reiterating the anti-fascist slogan himself in solidarity.
Stalin emphasized that the fundamental right to peaceful political expression cannot be criminalized by an insecure executive eager to appease the central ruling party. Punishing a young student for expressing political dissent reflected an alarming decline into authoritarian governance in Tamil Nadu.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK would stand unflinchingly as a bulwark against state-sponsored intimidation and arbitrary police overreach across Tamil Nadu. He called upon all secular and democratic movements across the nation to unite against attempts to suppress civic dissent and stifle the legitimate voices of citizens.
