Unconscionable!

The Central and State Govts are heartless and incompetent in keeping prices of essential goods under control. I urge the Centre to reduce excise duty and State reduce Sales Tax immediately.

Editorial context

DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Union and Tamil Nadu governments as petrol prices surged to 82 rupees per litre and diesel reached 75 rupees per litre. Stalin termed these unprecedented fuel rates unconscionable, accusing both administrations of heartless indifference and administrative incompetence in controlling the spiraling cost of essential living. He urged the Union government to slash inflated central excise duties and demanded that the state administration immediately reduce its commercial sales tax on petroleum products.

Stalin pointed out that exorbitant transportation costs directly burdened working families, small enterprises, and agricultural producers across Tamil Nadu. Daily commuters, autorickshaw drivers, and commercial transporters were pushed into acute economic hardship, while rising logistics expenses drove up food and grocery prices in local markets. Instead of passing the relief of moderate international crude rates to citizens, the ruling dispensations continued extracting windfall revenues through oppressive fuel taxation.

Stalin emphasized that responsible governance requires empathetic fiscal policy that shields ordinary citizens from artificial inflation. He warned that public anger over unbearable living expenses would soon dismantle the complacency of both ruling regimes.
