DMK president M.K. Stalin marked Chennai Day by celebrating a defining milestone in Tamil history accomplished by Muthamizharignar Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi: the official renaming of the state capital from the colonial Madras to Chennai across all languages. Stalin recounted that while the metropolis was traditionally known as Chennai in Tamil, it continued to be addressed as Madras in English and other international languages. Kalaignar permanently ended this colonial distinction in 1996, issuing statutory orders that established Chennai as the singular, proud name recognized worldwide.
Stalin emphasized that this momentous decision symbolized the reclamation of indigenous identity, cultural dignity, and historical continuity for the Tamil people. Chennai Day is an enduring reminder of Kalaignar's unshakeable commitment to elevating the linguistic stature of Tamil Nadu on the global stage.
Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will perpetually honor and protect the cultural legacy fostered by Dravidian stalwarts. He urged the younger generation to take immense pride in their heritage, promising that the party will continue building a progressive, tolerant, and globally competitive capital city rooted in self-respect, linguistic pride, and equitable urban prosperity for all residents.
