DMK president M.K. Stalin warmly welcomed the interim order of the Madras High Court granting an absolute stay on coercive land acquisition proceedings for the proposed Chennai-Salem eight-lane greenfield expressway project. Stalin stated that the judiciary had administered a fitting, well-deserved lesson to the authoritarian AIADMK administration, which had unleashed police intimidation to seize fertile farmlands and forested tracts from innocent rural families without genuine public consultations or statutory environmental impact approvals.
Stalin emphasized that the state government's heavy-handed tactics—including arbitrary arrests of protesting farmers, environmental researchers, and political leaders—represented an intolerable abuse of administrative power. Fertile agricultural belts, groundwater recharge basins, and fragile mountain ecosystems across Salem, Dharmapuri, and Tiruvannamalai districts faced irreversible destruction solely to promote a corporatized corridor.
Stalin demanded that the government abandon coercive land grabs permanently and explore sustainable alternatives, such as upgrading existing national highway alignments connecting Chennai and Salem without destroying agrarian livelihoods. He affirmed that the DMK will stand resolutely alongside agrarian communities, guaranteeing that agricultural lands, forest ecology, and citizen welfare are defended from destructive executive projects across Tamil Nadu. Farmer rights must take precedence over corporate highways.
