DMK leader M.K. Stalin welcomed the Madras High Court judgment directing the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate the tragic police firing on anti-Sterlite protesters in Thoothukudi. Expressing solemn relief at the judicial decision, Stalin stated that transferring the probe away from local state authorities was an essential first step toward uncovering the truth. He demanded that all officials and police personnel responsible for gunning down thirteen peaceful citizens in broad daylight face strict prosecution under the law.
Stalin pointed out that the brutal state crackdown had not only killed thirteen innocent demonstrators but also left more than fifty individuals permanently maimed and severely injured. The state administration had engaged in repeated attempts to rationalize the violence and shield senior police commanders and administrative magistrates who authorized live ammunition against unarmed crowds. Stalin emphasized that such grave human rights violations in a democracy cannot go unpunished.
Stalin asserted that the DMK stands resolutely with the affected families and the people of Thoothukudi in their quest for justice. He affirmed that only an impartial federal inquiry followed by rigorous judicial accountability could restore public trust in the rule of law.
