DMK leader M.K. Stalin announced widespread protest demonstrations across Tamil Nadu on July 27, 2018, to condemn the ruling AIADMK government's draconian decision to hike municipal property taxes by 50 to 100 percent. Calling for massive picketing in front of all municipal corporation and municipal council offices, Stalin castigated the exorbitant tariff escalation as an intolerable extortion on urban households. He questioned whether the administration was levying a legitimate tax or actively confiscating citizens' hard-earned properties.

Stalin emphasized that ordinary families, small shopkeepers, and working-class urban residents were already reeling under severe inflation, sluggish economic growth, and burdensome indirect taxes. Imposing an unprecedented doubling of property levies without enhancing municipal services, sanitation, or water supply exposed the corrupt government's predatory attitude toward taxpayers. Instead of curbing administrative pilferage, the regime opted to penalize common residents to bridge municipal budget deficits.

Stalin declared that the DMK would stand resolutely with burdened citizens in resisting unfair municipal burdens. He demanded an immediate, total rollback of the regressive property tax revision, warning that democratic agitation will intensify across urban local bodies if public demands are ignored.
