DMK leader M.K. Stalin extended strong support to the ongoing indefinite nationwide strike staged by lorry owners and transport federations, demanding the abolition of exploitative highway toll plazas and the introduction of an annual toll collection mechanism. Stalin affirmed that the demands raised by the transport operators reflect the genuine grievances of the broader public, who bear the cascading costs of relentless toll collections. He urged the Union government to initiate immediate ministerial negotiations to arrive at an amicable resolution.
The prolonged transport strike had paralyzed interstate logistics, halting the movement of essential commodities, agricultural produce, and raw manufacturing materials across Tamil Nadu and other states. Stalin pointed out that private concessionaires continued to collect exorbitant tolls on national highways long after recovering capital investments and maintenance costs. Instead of addressing the justified pleas of the trucking sector, which was already suffocating under skyrocketing diesel prices, central authorities maintained an indifferent stance.
Stalin emphasized that the logistics sector forms the economic backbone of domestic trade and commerce. He called upon the Union government to engage with transport representatives with empathy and fairness, eliminating unnecessary toll hurdles and safeguarding public transit convenience.
