DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised strong objections in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on July 9, 2018, condemning the state government for arresting innocent citizens who protested the proposed Salem eight-lane expressway. Addressing the treasury benches, Stalin warned that administrations relying on police coercion to suppress public dissent inevitably collapse under popular discontent. He called on the AIADMK ministry to abandon its heavy-handed tactics and engage agrarian communities facing eviction.
The eight-lane greenfield corridor had sparked widespread protests across Salem, Dharmapuri, and Kancheepuram districts, where farmers feared losing fertile agricultural holdings and homesteads. Instead of addressing grassroots anxieties through transparent consultations, district authorities deployed heavy police contingents and detained demonstrators under preventive custody laws. Stalin asserted that forcing an infrastructure project through arbitrary police intimidation violates basic democratic rights and exposes administrative vulnerability.
Stalin urged the Chief Minister to respect constitutional freedoms and halt coercive land acquisition until genuine farmer consent is secured. He emphasized that genuine economic progress cannot come at the expense of agricultural livelihoods. The DMK leader reaffirmed that his party will champion the rights of agrarian families against authoritarian administrative measures.
