DMK leader M.K. Stalin welcomed the Supreme Court constitution bench ruling on July 4, 2018, which decreed that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi is bound by the aid and advice of the elected government. Stalin stated that if a union territory with limited powers must have its elected executive respected, governors in full-fledged states possess no constitutional authority to run parallel administrations. He specifically advised the Tamil Nadu Governor to internalize the apex court's constitutional guidance.
The Supreme Court verdict clarified that constitutional functionaries cannot obstruct elected representatives who derive authority directly from the people. In Tamil Nadu, Governor Banwarilal Purohit had triggered intense debate by convening independent administrative review meetings with district collectors, bypassing the state cabinet. Stalin noted that such executive overreach violates the basic federal structure, creating unnecessary friction between the Raj Bhavan and local governance institutions.
Stalin urged gubernatorial offices across India to respect legislative boundaries and avoid partisan administrative interference. He called for preserving constitutional decency and state autonomy. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend federalism, ensuring that unelected central appointees do not encroach upon powers reserved for state governments.
