DMK leader M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the Karnataka government on June 30, 2018, for raising fresh procedural hurdles over the Cauvery river dispute. Stalin urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to assemble all Members of Parliament representing the state and lead an immediate delegation to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He insisted that the state administration must take decisive action to ensure the Supreme Court verdict on river water sharing is implemented without compromise.
The Cauvery delta serves as Tamil Nadu's rice bowl, where hundreds of thousands of farming households depend on timely reservoir releases to commence agricultural operations. Stalin noted that Karnataka's reluctance to implement court-directed water sharing quotas threatened the livelihoods of delta cultivators who had already endured consecutive drought seasons. Bureaucratic delays in setting up operational river oversight bodies had left regional farmers stranded without assured irrigation waters for their standing crops.
Stalin insisted that the Tamil Nadu government must shed its administrative passivity and actively pursue constitutional remedies to protect riparian rights. He emphasized that delta livelihoods cannot be sacrificed for political expediency. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly mobilize support across political lines to secure Tamil Nadu's rightful water entitlement.
