DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised urgent questions in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 28, 2018, demanding clarity on the status of two unanimous state bills seeking exemption from NEET. The bills had been passed by the assembly and forwarded to the President of India for statutory assent. Stalin urged the state government to file a writ petition in the Supreme Court directing the Union government to grant presidential clearance without further delay.
The Tamil Nadu legislature had unanimously resolved that common entrance examinations severely disadvantage rural students who study under the state board syllabus. Stalin pointed out that while months had elapsed since the bills were transmitted to New Delhi, the AIADMK administration showed unpardonable lethargy in securing presidential approval. This bureaucratic stalemate left thousands of aspiring medical students in extreme distress, uncertain about admission procedures and facing insurmountable institutional barriers.
Stalin asserted that the state government possesses a constitutional duty to defend legislative sovereignty and protect the educational futures of state students. He urged the ministry to take bold judicial action rather than issuing evasive replies. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently fight in legislature and courts to abolish NEET in Tamil Nadu.
