DMK leader M.K. Stalin issued an urgent appeal on June 20, 2018, calling on the Union government to immediately invite striking lorry owners for bilateral talks to reach an amicable settlement. Stalin also criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami for maintaining an indifferent attitude toward the escalating freight crisis. He urged the state executive to abandon its customary lethargy and proactively engage transport federations to resolve the deadlock.
The nationwide strike organized by goods transport operators had brought vehicular freight operations to a complete standstill across southern states. Lorry operators were protesting against steep daily hikes in diesel prices, inflated third-party vehicle insurance premiums, and exorbitant toll gate levies that made transport operations commercially unviable. Stalin noted that halting commercial freight crippled industrial supply chains and prevented agricultural produce from reaching urban markets, leaving small producers stranded with perishable goods.
Stalin insisted that the state administration cannot remain a passive bystander while commercial supply chains disintegrate. He called for coordinated action between central transport authorities and state leadership to address freight grievances promptly. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK supports legitimate transport demands, urging swift administrative intervention to protect ordinary consumers from inflationary hardship.
