DMK leader M.K. Stalin called upon the Union government on June 19, 2018, to take immediate steps to obtain Karnataka's nominated representative for the Cauvery Water Management Authority. Stalin emphasized that the Centre must not remain an indifferent spectator while inter-state river agreements are deliberately stalled. He insisted that if the Karnataka government failed to submit its nominee, the Tamil Nadu government must promptly move the Supreme Court to ensure the authority becomes operational without compromise.

The Supreme Court had mandated the creation of a statutory river management authority to supervise reservoir storage, monitor inflows, and regulate water releases according to established monthly quotas. Karnataka's delay in naming its representative threatened to paralyze the regulatory mechanism right at the onset of the Southwest monsoon. Stalin pointed out that without a functioning authority, Tamil Nadu farmers in the Cauvery delta faced another disastrous agricultural season deprived of their legitimate share of water.

Stalin asserted that statutory court mandates cannot be undermined through inter-state foot-dragging or central apathy. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to shed its passive posture and assert riparian rights decisively. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently demand judicial and administrative enforcement to protect delta livelihoods.
