DMK leader M.K. Stalin raised a searching constitutional challenge on June 19, 2018, asking whether Tamil Nadu remained a democratic society or had been converted into a police hunting ground under the AIADMK administration. Highlighting a series of violent police actions against peaceful civic protestors, Stalin condemned the state government for unleashing armed law enforcement personnel against ordinary citizens, environmental defenders, and democratic activists exercising their constitutional right to protest.

Public discontent had surged across the state over environmental destruction in Thoothukudi, arbitrary land demarcations for the Salem expressway, and rural distress in agrarian belts. Instead of initiating political dialogue or redressing public grievances, the state administration responded with preventive detentions, midnight home raids, and severe armed assaults. Stalin noted that converting civil law enforcement into a coercive weapon against local communities destroys popular faith in the rule of law and indicates deep political insecurity within the ruling regime.

Stalin declared that state terror can never extinguish legitimate democratic aspirations. He demanded that the government immediately halt police excesses and hold errant police officers accountable for human rights violations. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently defend civil liberties and stand firmly beside citizens resisting state repression.
