DMK leader M.K. Stalin met striking government staff and teachers affiliated with the JACTO-GEO federation in Chennai on June 12, 2018, extending full solidarity to their indefinite hunger strike. Stalin subsequently raised their grievances in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, urging Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami to abandon his administrative obstinacy. He demanded that the state executive invite union representatives for direct negotiations to resolve their legitimate demands regarding pension restoration and salary parity.
Government employees and school teachers had organized statewide demonstrations demanding the abolition of the contributory pension scheme and the restoration of the defined old pension system. They also sought the rectification of pay anomalies arising from the Seventh Pay Commission and the release of pending dearness allowances. Stalin noted that instead of addressing the reasonable anxieties of the public workforce, the government responded with salary freezes, punitive disciplinary transfers, and police harassment.
Stalin asserted that civil servants and educators form the operational backbone of state public administration and delivery of social welfare. He stressed that prolonged confrontation between the government and public employees demoralizes administrative machinery and harms students. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will champion public workers' statutory entitlements in both legislative and public arenas.
