DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the state administration in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on June 6, 2018, to immediately reduce value-added tax on petrol and diesel to alleviate inflationary burdens on ordinary citizens. Citing the progressive example of neighboring Kerala, which slashed state sales tax by one rupee per liter effective June 1, Stalin called upon the AIADMK ministry to utilize its sovereign taxation powers to provide immediate price relief to motorists, farmers, and commercial transporters.
Relentless price increases by oil companies had driven retail fuel prices to historic peaks, causing hardship for daily commuters and small businesses. Stalin noted that while rising diesel prices increased agricultural costs and food prices, the Tamil Nadu government collected windfall revenues without offering relief. He asserted that claiming revenue constraints while neighboring states provided assistance demonstrated disregard for public welfare.
Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister take immediate executive action to cut fuel duties during the ongoing legislative session. He emphasized that lowering fuel taxes is essential to curb retail inflation. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently champion consumer relief and pressure the government to reduce predatory fuel taxation.
