DMK leader M.K. Stalin responded cautiously on June 2, 2018, to the Union government's gazette notification establishing the Cauvery Water Management Authority, published after an unpardonable delay of 104 days. While acknowledging that the notification provided initial procedural relief, Stalin stressed that the people and farmers of Tamil Nadu will experience genuine satisfaction only when water is released from Mettur dam on the traditional date of June 12 for Kuruvai cultivation.

The Cauvery delta, encompassing Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, depends entirely on timely reservoir releases to initiate short-term paddy cultivation. Over previous years, delayed water releases had forced farming communities to abandon Kuruvai crops, causing severe rural economic devastation. Stalin pointed out that while the Centre had finally issued the gazette under intense judicial pressure, practical relief would remain elusive unless the central government ensured immediate water inflows into the Mettur reservoir to facilitate customary canal opening.

Stalin called upon the state government to make comprehensive preparations and demand that the newly formed authority guarantee necessary water releases without delay. He emphasized that agricultural timelines cannot be compromised. Stalin reaffirmed that the DMK will steadfastly defend the rights of delta farmers until full agricultural stability is restored.
