DMK leader M.K. Stalin threw an open political challenge to Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on May 31, 2018, declaring that the DMK is prepared for a full-day debate in the Legislative Assembly regarding the historical origins and expansion of the Sterlite copper plant. Stalin demanded that the Chief Minister publicly declare whether he possessed the courage to accept this legislative discussion, instead of leveling false allegations against the DMK from outside the house.
Tensions escalated following the police firing in Thoothukudi, which claimed thirteen lives during protests against the polluting smelter. The AIADMK administration sought to evade accountability by shifting historical blame onto previous DMK ministries. Stalin explained that assembly records and industrial clearances would establish how AIADMK governments facilitated land allocations, clearances, and expansions for the plant. Transparent legislative scrutiny was essential to present the truth to the public.
Stalin called upon the treasury benches to allocate dedicated assembly time for an open discussion rather than shutting down debate through procedural maneuvers. He emphasized that the public deserved total clarity. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continue to demand full accountability from the government for the Thoothukudi massacre.
