DMK leader M.K. Stalin strongly criticized Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on May 31, 2018, for attempting to disown the Sterlite copper plant, which had been nurtured and expanded under successive AIADMK administrations. Stalin stated that it was unbecoming of a Chief Minister to deflect responsibility onto the DMK while misrepresenting the opposition's principled decision to boycott assembly proceedings to demand a permanent legislative closure of the industrial unit.
Following the state-sponsored violence against anti-Sterlite demonstrators in Thoothukudi, the DMK demanded an immediate legislative resolution and policy enactment to close the factory permanently. When the state government refused to discuss the massacre or hold responsible ministers accountable, the DMK boycotted the assembly to register its fierce protest alongside grieving citizens. Stalin pointed out that instead of engaging with public grief, the Chief Minister resorted to misleading public statements to divert attention from administrative failures.
Stalin asserted that the historical record cannot be rewritten through false political propaganda. He demanded that the state government take definitive legal steps rather than indulging in petty political attacks. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will persistently stand with the people of Thoothukudi until complete environmental justice is secured.
