DMK leader M.K. Stalin declared on May 29, 2018, that his party legislators will boycott Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly proceedings until the state cabinet formally convenes and passes a policy resolution to permanently shut down the Sterlite copper plant in Thoothukudi. Stalin criticized the ruling AIADMK administration for issuing cosmetic closure orders that fail to withstand judicial scrutiny. He stressed that only a binding policy decision taken by the cabinet can ensure the enduring closure demanded by citizens.
The announcement came following deadly police firing during anti-Sterlite protests in Thoothukudi that claimed thirteen innocent lives. Environmental groups and local residents had campaigned for over a hundred days against severe industrial pollution and public health hazards caused by the smelting facility. Instead of passing an executive ordinance backed by cabinet authority, the government issued an administrative order that left legal loopholes for the plant owners.
Stalin affirmed that the DMK will not participate in legislative sessions while the government dodges accountability for the civilian deaths. He demanded that Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami place the matter before the state cabinet immediately. Stalin pledged continuous political resistance until the polluter is banished permanently from the district.
