DMK president M.K. Stalin and party legislators wore black shirts to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on May 29, 2018, registering solemn democratic protest against the police firing that claimed thirteen lives in Thoothukudi. Stalin condemned the AIADMK ministry under Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami for unleashing lethal violence against citizens who had gathered for the centennial day of peaceful demonstrations against the polluting Sterlite copper smelter.
Entering the legislative hall clad in mourning black, Stalin demanded an immediate and unconditional discussion on the police brutality. He emphasized that elected representatives could not conduct routine parliamentary business while families across Thoothukudi grieved their slain kin. The DMK leader asserted that using assault weapons against unarmed civilians revealed total administrative callousness and executive failure.
Stalin called upon the state government to hold police officials and political superiors criminally liable for the massacre. He criticized the administration for seeking to bury truths behind procedural delays and judicial commissions. Reaffirming solidarity with the affected public, Stalin stated that the DMK will sustain statewide agitations until complete justice and adequate compensation are secured for every victim.
