#BanSterlite
DMK leader M.K. Stalin demanded on May 28, 2018, that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami immediately convene a special cabinet meeting to pass a legally robust government order permanently shutting down the Sterlite copper smelter in Thoothukudi. Stalin cautioned that issuing hasty administrative notices under the Water Act without comprehensive statutory backing would merely enable the corporate promoter to obtain stay orders in appellate tribunals.
The Tamil Nadu government had issued a brief executive order directing the State Pollution Control Board to seal the copper smelter following nationwide outrage over the fatal police firing on anti-Sterlite protesters. Stalin pointed out that similar flawed executive orders in 2013 had been easily overturned by judicial forums because the government failed to present rigorous scientific findings and legislative sanction.
Stalin urged the Chief Minister to demonstrate genuine goodwill toward Thoothukudi residents by detailing the severe environmental contamination and health hazards in an official cabinet resolution. He insisted that the administration must anchor its closure order in statutory provisions that recognize environmental justice as paramount. Stalin emphasized that the DMK will persistently hold the government accountable until foolproof legal protection is delivered.
