DMK leader M.K. Stalin criticized Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami on May 28, 2018, for enacting a deceptive drama regarding the closure of the Sterlite copper smelter in Thoothukudi. Stalin recalled that in 2013, former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had ordered the plant shut under defective procedures, only for the company to secure judicial stay orders and resume operations within months. He warned that Palaniswami was adopting the identical tactic to appease immediate public anger.
Stalin asserted that the AIADMK administration lacked genuine intent to safeguard coastal ecology and human life. By relying on fragile administrative notifications rather than an executive policy enacted through the cabinet, the state left room for corporate lawyers to dismantle the closure order in courts. He highlighted that thirteen citizens had sacrificed their lives during peaceful agitations demanding clean air and water.
Demanding an end to political trickery, Stalin urged the state government to demonstrate honesty by bringing forth statutory legislation. He stated that Tamil Nadu requires permanent legal guarantees, not temporary theater. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will continue to mobilize democratic forces against administrative deceit and corporate impunity.
