DMK leader M.K. Stalin urged the Tamil Nadu government on May 27, 2018, to disburse compensation of one crore rupees each to the families of the thirteen civilians killed in the Thoothukudi police firing. Stalin proposed that the financial assistance be drawn from the one hundred crore rupee environmental penalty and accumulated interest imposed on the Sterlite copper plant by the Supreme Court of India in 2013.
Stalin noted that the apex court had penalized the industrial conglomerate for decades of environmental violations, directing the funds to restore ecological balance and aid affected populations in Thoothukudi. He pointed out that the state government had neglected to deploy those dedicated resources effectively while local residents suffered debilitating illnesses and groundwater poisoning. In addition to compensating bereaved families, Stalin demanded comprehensive medical support and financial relief for injured protesters and pollution victims.
Highlighting the acute distress faced by working families who lost sole breadwinners, Stalin insisted that the state deliver dignified economic rehabilitation without delay. He stressed that administrative compensation cannot substitute for justice, but adequate financial support remains an urgent obligation. Stalin affirmed DMK support for all affected households.
