DMK leader M.K. Stalin expressed profound anguish on May 27, 2018, over emerging video evidence documenting widespread police brutality in Thoothukudi following the anti-Sterlite demonstrations. Stalin stated that security forces had hunted down unarmed citizens in residential neighborhoods as if chasing enemy combatants on a battlefield. He highlighted distressing footage showing police dragging the bodies of deceased civilians along public streets like animals.
The DMK leader pointed to the horrifying, premeditated murder of a young woman who was shot directly in the mouth by sharpshooters. Stalin argued that such targeted gunfire proved the operation was designed to instill terror rather than disperse crowds. He stated that the brutal conduct of the police personnel had shocked the collective conscience of Tamil Nadu and shattered faith in state authority.
Stalin demanded that the state administration immediately cease all nocturnal raids and arbitrary detentions in Thoothukudi villages. He insisted that the officers responsible for shooting innocent civilians be suspended and prosecuted for murder under the penal code. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will ensure these atrocities are brought to light before national and international human rights forums.
